Rafael Castillo, city in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina
Rafael Castillo is a city in the middle of La Matanza with mixed features of older and newer buildings spread across several neighborhoods. The main road Carlos Casares Avenue connects different areas and leads to a train station as well as many shops and markets in the center.
About a century ago, Rafael Castillo was a rural area with farms and brick-making ovens. After a church was built in 1912 and the train line came in the 1940s, the population grew steadily until the area was officially declared a city in the 1970s.
The name Rafael Castillo honors a politician and lawyer who donated land for the train line and shaped the neighborhood's development. The community gathers regularly in local soccer fields, community centers, and churches, where traditions stay alive and people come together.
Rafael Castillo train station on the Belgrano Sur line makes it easy to reach the city, and many bus lines cross the area for local and far-reaching connections. Most streets are drivable, but some areas have unpaved roads, so take your time when exploring these parts.
The Favaloro Hospital, a large modern building, was built to serve a million people from Rafael Castillo and surrounding areas but largely does not function, offering only limited basic care services. For residents, it stands as a symbol of unfulfilled promises and hope for better days ahead.
