La Matanza is an administrative division in Buenos Aires Province comprising sixteen localities such as San Justo, Ramos Mejía and Ciudad Evita. The territory borders the Argentine capital and forms part of the western metropolitan area.
The administrative unit was founded in 1784 under the name Partido de Matanza y Pozos and kept its original designation. The name recalls confrontations between Spanish colonizers and Querandí inhabitants during the 16th century.
The National University of La Matanza serves 25,000 students and functions as an educational center for the region's growing population.
The main administration is located in San Justo, roughly 16 kilometers west of downtown Buenos Aires. The individual localities are well connected by roads and bus routes.
