Al Ahmad Mosque, Islamic center in San Cristobal, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Al Ahmad Mosque is a place of worship in the San Cristóbal neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, built around a central dome and a minaret visible from the street. Inside, the prayer space is arranged on two levels to welcome worshippers at the same time.
The mosque was built in 1986, making it one of the first purpose-built Islamic places of worship in Buenos Aires. It was founded to serve a growing Muslim community that had settled in the city over the previous decades.
The Al Ahmad Mosque draws worshippers from many different backgrounds, making it a space where Arabic, South Asian, and Argentine Muslim communities meet. The call to prayer that rings out from the minaret is a sound rarely heard elsewhere in Buenos Aires.
The mosque sits close to the Inclán metro station, making it easy to reach by public transport from most parts of the city. Before entering, visitors are expected to remove their shoes and dress modestly, as is standard in any mosque.
The metro station next to the mosque carries the official name Inclán-Mezquita Al Ahmad, making it one of the very few stations in Buenos Aires named after a religious building. The city authorities added the mosque's name to the station long after the line opened, recognizing its role in the neighborhood.
