Bernasconi Institute, Educational palace in Parque Patricios, Argentina
The Bernasconi Institute is an eclectic-style multi-story educational complex in the Parque Patricios neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The property brings together several schools, interior halls, courtyards, and outdoor areas all within a single large compound.
Swiss-Italian manufacturer Felix Bernasconi donated his private estate to the city of Buenos Aires in the early 20th century with the condition that a school be built on the grounds. Construction ran from 1921 to 1929, and the complex is now a protected national historical monument of Argentina.
The institute houses a museum with old teaching materials and botanical collections displayed in rooms lined with marble walls. Walking through these rooms gives a direct sense of how Argentine schooling looked and felt across different generations.
The grounds cover a large area, so allow plenty of time to walk through the different sections and courtyards. If you want to visit the museum inside, it is worth checking opening conditions in advance, as access may depend on the school schedule.
The auditorium was once fitted with a retractable glass ceiling that could be opened to hold concerts in the open air. This kind of moving roof was a rare technical feature for a school building of that era.
