Casa Mappin & Webb, Academic art building in San Nicolás, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Casa Mappin & Webb is an academic art building on Florida Street featuring a symmetrical facade with classical architectural elements and refined stone carvings throughout. The structure spans multiple floors with carefully proportioned windows and elaborately designed entrance areas.
The building was constructed in 1911 when Florida Street was at its height as the city's aristocratic shopping boulevard. Architects Louis Dujarric and Robert Prentice designed a structure that reflected the wealth and European aspirations of Buenos Aires at that moment.
The building showcases classical artistic principles that shaped Buenos Aires in the early 1900s, with its ornate stone facade reflecting the European tastes that influenced the city at that time.
The building currently functions as a bank branch and sits in an easily accessible location on Florida Street. The position offers good connections to public transportation and is surrounded by numerous other shops and services.
The building once housed a silver cup crafted by William Bellchambers in 1841 for Queen Victoria, which was later transformed into the Los Andes Golf Trophy. This artwork unexpectedly connects European royal heritage with Argentine sporting traditions.
