Galería Güemes, Art Nouveau building in Florida Street, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Galería Güemes is an Art Nouveau building that extends through the center of Buenos Aires, connecting Florida and San Martín streets. Inside, ornate marble columns and glass domes create a distinctive passage through multiple floors.
Designed by architect Francesco Gianotti in 1915, the building was the first high-rise structure in the city with fourteen floors. This construction marked a turning point in how Buenos Aires began to build upward.
The building houses a theater where tango performances take place after major restoration work in the early 2000s. These shows reflect how the space remains connected to local artistic life.
The building is easy to reach on one of the city's main shopping streets, where you can walk straight through from one side to the other. An observation area on the upper floors offers city views and is accessible on weekdays during morning and afternoon hours.
French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of The Little Prince, lived in an apartment within the building during his time in Buenos Aires. This connection to an internationally recognized author adds a layer of literary history to the space.
