Reserva ecológica Ciudad Universitaria

The Reserva ecologica Ciudad Universitaria is a nature reserve on the campus of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Santa Fe, positioned in a valley along the Parana River. The site contains wetlands, gallery forests, and shrublands that extend near Setubal Lagoon.

The reserve was established in 1998 by the Universidad Nacional del Litoral and the Habitat & Development Foundation to protect the river valley ecosystems from further change. This creation marked an important effort to safeguard this fragile landscape.

The reserve serves local school groups and university students as a place for hands-on environmental learning, where they observe nature and wildlife directly. The grounds are regularly used for field trips and educational visits that show how this riverside ecosystem works and why it matters to protect it.

The grounds are open several days per week and can be explored on foot, with clear paths leading through different habitats. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and be aware that certain areas may become difficult to access after heavy rain.

The reserve hosts bird species that are adapted to different habitat types within the site, including the Greater Thornbird and other specialized species typical of South American river valleys. Beyond birds, visitors may spot mammals like coypus and opossums living here naturally.
