The National Atomic Energy Commission of Argentina developed this reactor as part of the country's commitment to nuclear technology advancement and energy independence.

Located adjacent to the Atucha Nuclear Power Plant, the reactor requires annual replacement of uranium oxide fuel enriched to 3.4 percent U-235.

The reactor employs natural circulation for primary coolant systems, eliminating the need for pumps and reducing the risk of core meltdown accidents.
