Vallegrande, Administrative centre and colonial town in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia
Vallegrande is an administrative center and colonial mountain town in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. Located some 125 kilometers southwest of Santa Cruz de la Sierra at an elevation of 2,030 meters, it serves as the hub for five municipalities in the region.
Founded on March 30, 1612, the town quickly became a key administrative hub during the colonial period. Its strategic mountain location allowed it to oversee and govern multiple surrounding communities.
The weekly market displays local specialties like handmade bread, fruit liquors, and wines crafted by farmers from surrounding valleys. People gather there to buy, sell, and connect through trade in these regional products.
A local airstrip serves light aircraft connections, while a main road links the town directly to Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. Visitors can reach the town by road or air depending on their travel preferences and schedule.
The town became connected to a significant moment in world history when the remains of revolutionary Che Guevara were temporarily buried here in 1967 before being transferred to Cuba in 1997. This historical connection reminds visitors of Bolivia's complex past during the 20th century.
