Río Pilcomayo National Park, National park and wetland sanctuary in Formosa, Argentina.
Río Pilcomayo National Park is a protected area in Formosa Province that spans grasslands, wetlands, palm forests, and gallery forests. These different habitats support a wide range of plants and animals in this eastern Chaco landscape.
The area was established as a national park in 1951 with extensive boundaries, but its protected territory was reduced in 1968 to reach its present size.
The region has long been home to Indigenous communities who developed deep connections with the river landscape and shared their knowledge about living sustainably in this environment.
Visitors can reach two recreational areas, Estero Poi and Laguna Blanca, with camping facilities, restrooms, and walking trails near Laguna Blanca town. The best time to visit depends on the season, as water levels and wildlife viewing opportunities shift throughout the year.
The park is home to more than 300 bird species and dozens of mammal species, making it a significant location for wildlife observation. White palm trees reach notable heights and serve as nesting sites for numerous birds, especially parrots.
