Misiones Orientales, Historical region in northeastern Argentina.

Misiones Orientales is a historical region in northeastern Argentina that encompasses a network of former mission settlements. The territory stretches along the eastern border area and holds remains of seven main settlements that once served as religious and social centers for indigenous communities.

Spanish Jesuits founded seven main settlements in this region between 1609 and 1756, creating a largely self-governed territory for Guarani communities. The area developed into a distinct system that ended only after the expulsion of the order from Spanish colonies.

The area shows the fusion of Jesuit teaching methods with Guarani ways of life through shared workshops, music training, and farming techniques. Visitors can still see traces of this collaboration in preserved structures and local craft traditions today.

The area preserves archaeological remains and historical records at various sites scattered across the eastern border region. Visitors should plan for several days to reach the main sites and account for the distances between individual locations.

The territory functioned under independent administration based on religious principles that implemented social equality laws for the indigenous population. This form of organization differed markedly from the usual colonial governance structure of Spanish territories.
