Parque da Independência, Park and heritage site in Ipiranga, São Paulo, Brazil.
Parque da Independência is a large park in the Ipiranga neighborhood of São Paulo, with gardens, forested sections, and walking paths spread across its grounds. At its center stands the Ipiranga Museum, flanked by the Independence Monument and the Casa do Grito.
The site marks the spot where Dom Pedro I declared Brazilian independence from Portugal in 1822. The monuments and buildings erected here over the following decades turned this riverside hill into a place of national memory.
The Independence Monument and Ipiranga Museum together create a place where Brazilians experience and understand their national history. Visitors find here a center that keeps the memory of independence alive for the public.
The park is open on most days and offers shaded paths and open lawns that are easy to walk through at any pace. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, as the grounds cover a wide area with different sections worth exploring.
The forested section of the park holds around 160 tree species, some native to São Paulo and others brought from elsewhere. This mix gives the woodland an unusual look, somewhere between a planted garden and a natural forest.
