Cine Marabá, Movie theater in central São Paulo, Brazil
Cine Marabá is a movie theater in downtown São Paulo, located on Avenida Ipiranga and housing several screening rooms spread across multiple floors. The rooms vary in size, and together they offer seating for over a thousand people.
The building opened as a cinema in 1945 and served as a gathering place in the heart of São Paulo for decades. In 2009, architect Ruy Ohtake oversaw a major renovation that turned it into a modern multiplex.
The Cine Marabá sits on Avenida Ipiranga, one of downtown São Paulo's most recognized streets, famously mentioned in the song "Sampa" by Caetano Veloso. Walking past the cinema today, visitors can still feel the street's role as a center of urban popular culture.
The cinema sits in a busy part of downtown São Paulo and is within walking distance of several metro stations. It runs daily screenings at various times, so a visit can be easily combined with a walk through the city center.
During the 2009 renovation, the original parquet flooring and the building's facade were deliberately kept, even as the interior was entirely rebuilt. This means visitors today walk into a space that carries the outer shell of the 1940s while everything inside has been renewed.
