Memory Museum of Bixiga, Cultural museum in Bixiga, São Paulo, Brazil.
The Memory Museum of Bixiga sits in a heritage-listed house on Rua dos Ingleses, displaying photographs and objects from the neighborhood's past. The collection holds roughly 1,900 artifacts, including traditional pasta-making machines, milk bottles, and costumes from the Vai-Vai samba school.
It was founded in 1981 by Armando Puglisi in a building that Italian immigrants constructed in the 1920s or 1930s. After closing for more than 10 years, it reopened in 2017 with a stronger emphasis on community involvement.
The collection reflects the long history of Italian, Afro-Brazilian, and Middle Eastern communities that shaped the neighborhood. Visitors can see personal belongings and objects that belonged to people from the different groups who made their home here.
The place is easy to reach on foot and sits on a well-known street in the neighborhood with good accessibility. It makes sense to visit during regular hours and allow enough time to look through the collection at your own pace.
The archive holds roughly 10,000 photographs, including personal items connected to Carmen Miranda. The collection keeps growing as neighbors actively contribute their own stories and memories.
