Vargem Grande do Sul is a municipality in northeastern São Paulo state, situated on elevated terrain at roughly 720 meters above sea level. The settlement spans an area of about 270 square kilometers and is shaped by three major river systems.
The settlement began in 1832 as Várzea Grande, following an old trade route through the region. It gradually gained administrative status, becoming a district in 1888 before finally achieving municipal standing in 1922.
