Túnel 3/4, longest tunnel of Brazil
Túnel 3/4 is a road tunnel in Caraguatatuba, Brazil, that runs through the Serra do Mar mountain range and is also known as Túnel Antônio de Queiroz Galvão. The tunnel stretches over 5 kilometers long with two lanes in each direction and features modern lighting, ventilation systems, and comprehensive safety infrastructure.
Construction of the tunnel took place from 2016 to 2022, designed to replace long winding mountain roads and connect the coast to the Paraíba Valley more efficiently. The project represented one of the region's largest infrastructure undertakings using advanced tunneling techniques.
Drive at moderate speed through the tunnel since lanes are clearly marked and lighting adjusts as needed for visibility. In case of emergency, fire extinguishers, emergency phones, and exit points are placed approximately every 100 meters throughout the tunnel.
The structure was originally planned as two separate tunnels with a viaduct between them, but engineers combined them into one single tunnel to reduce environmental impact and accelerate the project. This design modification demonstrates how flexibility in planning led to a more practical solution.
