Ubatuba, Coastal municipality in São Paulo, Brazil.
Ubatuba is a coastal municipality in São Paulo, Brazil. It stretches along more than 100 beaches and preserves most of its territory within Serra do Mar State Park.
Portuguese settlers founded this coastal town on October 28, 1637, after a peace agreement with the Tupinambá people. This accord allowed permanent European settlement in this stretch of the Atlantic coast.
The name comes from the Tupi language, joining u'ubá meaning river cane with tyba meaning gathering, which reflects the indigenous roots of the region. This linguistic connection still reminds visitors of the original inhabitants and their relationship to the land.
The municipality sits about three hours by car from São Paulo via highway BR-101. Visitors should note that beaches spread across a wide area and a vehicle is often helpful for getting around.
Researchers have documented 565 different bird species in the territory, showing the rich biodiversity of this part of the Atlantic Forest. This count makes the region a notable spot for observers and nature lovers.
