Guandu River, Major river in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The Guandu River is a waterway in Rio de Janeiro that flows through the state before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. The river serves as the main source for a treatment facility that provides drinking water to the surrounding metropolitan area.
The river was formed when two smaller waterways merged to create what is now called the Guandu. This combination created an important water source for the region.
The Guandu River sustains the Quilombo dos Palmares traditional community while providing water resources for over 12 million residents in the metropolitan region.
Water from the river is processed through treatment facilities before reaching residents. Visiting is best during drier periods, as water levels rise significantly during rainy seasons.
Much of the water in this river does not come from its own basin but is diverted from another river system through engineering works. This diversion allows the region to meet demands that natural flow alone could not satisfy.
