Pontal, Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Pontal is a beach on the western edge of Rio de Janeiro, running along the Atlantic coast between the far end of Recreio Beach and the Itapua rock formation. It is wider than many other Rio beaches, with lifeguard stations, showers, restrooms, and kiosks that rent out umbrellas and chairs.
The beach gained wider recognition through Tim Maia, a Brazilian singer who named it in one of his songs and became closely associated with the area. That reference helped shape how people from Rio think about and identify this western stretch of coast.
Fishermen land their catch and sell fish directly on the sand, a habit that has shaped daily life along this stretch of coast for generations. Arriving in the early morning gives visitors a chance to see the boats come in and watch the exchange up close.
The beach sits at the western end of Rio de Janeiro and is most easily reached by car, with parking available nearby. Coming on a weekday gives you more room on the sand, since weekends tend to draw larger crowds from the city.
At low tide, natural pools form in the sand and create sheltered spots for swimming away from the open surf. These shallow pools are especially popular with families because the water inside them stays calm even when the ocean is rough.
