Museu Casa do Pontal, Folk art museum in Barra da Tijuca, Brazil
Museu Casa do Pontal is a folk art museum in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, displaying handmade works gathered from across Brazil. The building itself is a low house set in a garden, and the rooms are organized around broad themes such as work, religion, and celebration.
The French collector Jacques Van de Beuque began gathering Brazilian folk art in the 1950s, traveling across the country to buy works directly from the artists. Decades later, he turned his home in Barra da Tijuca into a place where this collection could be seen by the public.
The collection shows handmade figures and scenes drawn from everyday life across different Brazilian regions, from market days to religious processions. Many pieces come from the northeast of the country, where oral traditions and popular festivities have long shaped the way artists work.
The museum sits in a quiet residential area near the Barra da Tijuca shoreline and is easiest to reach by car or taxi. Once inside, the rooms follow a loose thematic order, so visitors can move through them at their own pace without needing a guided route.
Van de Beuque kept handwritten notes recording the name and hometown of each artist he bought from, which means many works here can be traced back to a specific person and place. This level of documentation is rare for folk art collections and has made the archive a reference point for researchers.
