Bangu, Administrative district in western Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The region extends over 4,570 hectares and contains residential areas, commercial centers, and the Bangu Penitentiary Complex, housing approximately 244,518 inhabitants.
The development of Bangu started in 1673 with Fazenda Bangu, later transforming into a textile manufacturing center with the establishment of Fábrica de Tecidos in 1893.
Unidos de Bangu represents one of Brazil's oldest samba schools, participating in Rio's carnival celebrations and contributing to the local cultural identity.
The Bangu Shopping center, constructed on the former textile factory site in 2007, serves as the primary commercial hub for residents in the western zone.
The district holds Rio de Janeiro's temperature record, reaching 43.3 degrees Celsius in January 1984 due to its geographical position away from the ocean.
