Fazenda da Taquara, Colonial farm in Taquara, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Fazenda da Taquara is a colonial estate in the Taquara neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The main house features a ground floor with a partial upper story in the central module and three separate entrance staircases for accessing different areas.
The estate was built during the Portuguese colonial period as a working farm in the region. Emperor Dom Pedro II stayed at the property for two months in 1843 to attend to the health matters of Princess Dona Januária.
The property displays Portuguese colonial design with a central courtyard layout, clay tile roof, and Tuscan columns that support the front veranda. Visitors can see how these architectural choices created spaces suited to the tropical climate of the region.
The Centro Cultural de Jacarepaguá organizes guided tours through the property to help visitors understand its layout and features. The site remains maintained by descendants of the Baron of Taquara.
The property currently serves as a filming location for TV Globo's soap opera 'Renascer' with multiple production sets built on the grounds. This dual purpose keeps the site active while maintaining its historical character for cultural use.
