The Episcopal Palace stands on Conceição Hill with eleven straight-lintel windows featuring protruding balconies and a triangular pediment added in the 19th century.
Built in 1634 as a small chapel, the palace became the residence of Rio de Janeiro bishops from 1702 to 1905 after French Capuchin friars left.
The palace reflects Portuguese military engineering with its square floor plan, internal courtyard, and prominent chapel rising within the main structure.
The building now houses the Army Geographic Service and maintains its original stone and lime construction with sections of wattle and daub.
French corsair Duguay-Trouin selected this palace as his residence during the period he controlled Rio de Janeiro in 1711.
