The fortress stands on an elevated position with stone walls and military structures designed to protect the coastline from Valongo to Praça Mauá.
Built between 1713 and 1718 following a French invasion, the fortress contained 36 cannons and served as the third largest artillery center in Rio de Janeiro.
The fortress includes a chapel and dungeons that held political prisoners from the Minas Gerais Conspiracy during the 1790s colonial period.
Visits require advance scheduling by phone and occur Monday through Thursday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Friday from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
The first recorded strike in Rio de Janeiro occurred at this fortress in 1791 when workers protested against delayed payments.
