USS McAnn, 1943 Cannon-class destroyer escort
The USS McAnn is a Cannon-class destroyer escort built in 1943 in the United States and later transferred to the Brazilian Navy where it became known as Bauru. The ship is compactly designed with guns, torpedo tubes, and anti-submarine equipment that reflect its role protecting convoys during the war.
The ship was built in 1943 and first served the US Navy before being transferred to Brazil in 1944 under a Lend-Lease program, where it conducted patrols for about 30 years. It was decommissioned in 1981 and placed as a museum ship in Flamengo Park in Rio de Janeiro in 1982.
The ship was named after Donald Roy McAnn, a sailor who died in combat during World War II. Visitors can see the cramped crew quarters and understand how sailors worked together and operated the vessel under difficult conditions.
The ship is located at the Brazilian Navy Cultural Center at Berth 22 in Rio de Janeiro and is accessible for public tours. Visitors can walk through the decks, view the control rooms, and explore the tight living spaces of the crew.
The ship made voyages to different ports even after becoming a museum, including a notable visit to Salvador in 1985, making it a rare example of a functioning museum ship. These journeys show that despite its history, the vessel was not merely preserved statically but occasionally still moved under its own power.
