Elevado da Perimetral, Elevated highway in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Elevado da Perimetral was an elevated expressway that ran above the port area of Rio de Janeiro, connecting multiple neighborhoods through an elevated concrete structure. The highway linked various major routes throughout the metropolitan region.
The highway was built between 1950 and 1960 and served as a major traffic route for decades. It was completely demolished in 2014 as part of the Porto Maravilha urban renewal project.
The structure created physical separation between neighborhoods and changed how people moved and connected across the city.
Since the structure was demolished decades ago, visitors cannot travel on it today, but the area around its former location is now much more walkable after the renovation. Surrounding streets and the port area are much more accessible to pedestrians now.
During demolition, several concrete beams disappeared under mysterious circumstances, puzzling local authorities. This unsolved story reveals how chaotic large construction projects can be in the city.
