José Chiachiri Municipal Historical Museum

The José Chiachiri Municipal Historical Museum occupies a former jail and courthouse building designed in 1896 by French architect Victor Dubugras, blending eclectic architectural styles. Inside, climate-controlled rooms hold a research library with manuscripts, digitized documents, and regional materials from local government archives.

Founded in 1957 through municipal legislation, the museum was renamed in 1976 to honor José Chiachiri, who directed the collection campaign during the 1950s. Converting the former jail into a repository for regional history allowed the community to preserve its past within a building that held its own chapter.

The building served as jail and courthouse for decades, which explains its formal, imposing design that still marks the city center today. Walking through these spaces, you notice how the community transformed a place of confinement into one dedicated to remembering local stories.
