Pico do Itacolomi, Mountain peak in Ouro Preto and Mariana, Brazil.
Pico do Itacolomi is a mountain peak on the border between the municipalities of Ouro Preto and Mariana in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It sits inside Itacolomi State Park, a protected area covered with dense forest, rocky outcrops, and small streams running through the terrain.
The peak served as a landmark for early European explorers in the 17th and 18th centuries, helping them find their way through the rough interior of what is now Minas Gerais. Its proximity to the gold deposits around Ouro Preto meant that the area around its base became settled as mining activity grew.
The name Itacolomi comes from the Tupi language spoken by indigenous people before European arrival, and roughly translates to "young stone" or "child stone," referring to a smaller rock formation near the summit. Visitors walking toward the top can spot this secondary peak and understand why the name stuck for so long.
A marked trail through the park leads up toward the summit, and most walkers take around two to three hours to reach the top depending on their pace. Starting early in the morning gives you clearer skies and cooler temperatures before the midday heat sets in.
At the summit, there is an orchid species that grows nowhere else on Earth, drawing plant specialists from far away to see it in the wild. The rocky ground near the top also supports other rare plants adapted to the thin soil and open exposure found only at that elevation.
