Pico do Cristal rises to 2,769 meters and features steep rocky terrain with natural stone formations along its pyramid-shaped structure. The mountain is accessible through two main routes via Caparaó National Park, depending on whether you approach from the west or south.

Pico do Cristal was long listed as Brazil's fourth-highest mountain, at 2,798 metres, then at 2,780 metres after a later survey. The IBGE and the Instituto Militar de Engenharia, through the Projeto Pontos Culminantes do Brasil, fixed the summit at 2,769.76 metres, and in 2016 the IBGE revised Brazil's highest elevations using new geoid mapping, confirming 2,769.05 metres and sixth place nationally.

The name comes from the abundant quartz rock formations on the massif, not from any local legend. Near the summit the vegetation is basically bromeliads and lilies growing over exposed rock, part of the park's highest-altitude zone. Some visitors rate the view here above that from Pico da Bandeira.

The climb to the summit is demanding and requires good preparation and physical stamina; starting early in the day is wise. Weather conditions can change quickly in the highlands, so be prepared for shifting conditions.

Pico do Cristal is the highest mountain lying entirely within Minas Gerais; the taller Pico da Bandeira, Pedra da Mina and Pico das Agulhas Negras all sit on state borders. Its summit lies about 930 metres west of the Espírito Santo boundary and 1,940 metres southwest of Pico da Bandeira, and the two peaks are visible from each other.
