Santana de Cataguases, Municipality in Minas Gerais, Brazil
Santana de Cataguases is a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, set on gently rolling terrain in the eastern part of the state. It has a small urban center surrounded by rural land used mainly for farming.
Santana de Cataguases became an independent municipality on July 1, 2008, after separating from the neighboring city of Cataguases. Before that, it was administered as part of that larger urban area and had no local government of its own.
The name Santana refers to Saint Anne, a Catholic saint, and this religious identity is visible in the way local festivals are organized around the church calendar. These gatherings bring together people from the town and surrounding farms, mixing prayer, food, and music in a way typical of rural Minas Gerais.
The easiest way to reach the area is by road from Cataguases, which is the nearest larger city and has better transport connections. If you plan to explore the rural parts of the municipality, having your own vehicle makes things much easier.
Santana de Cataguases is one of the youngest municipalities in Minas Gerais, having existed for less than two decades. Its name directly echoes that of its former parent city, Cataguases, which makes the historical link between the two places visible in everyday life.
