The bronze sculpture depicts Chico Prego standing upright, mounted on native stone in the central area of Serra municipality.
The statue commemorates the leader of the 1849 Queimado slave uprising, who was executed for organizing a rebellion of 300 people against broken promises of freedom.
The monument stands as a reminder of Brazilian resistance movements, representing the fight for human rights and liberty in Espírito Santo state.
The statue received a complete restoration in 2021 by its original creator, artist Tute, including reinforcement of the base and protection against water damage.
During the 2020 health emergency, local authorities placed a protective mask on the statue to promote prevention measures among residents.
