National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, Ethnographic museum in La Paz, Bolivia

The National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore occupies the Palacio de los Marqueses de Villaverde at the corner of Ingavi and Jenaro Sanjinés streets, a house built around 1730 and declared a national monument in 1930. Its three colonial patios once held family rooms, stables and service quarters; the main patio retains a stone coat of arms above a half-point arch. Since 2005 the La Paz headquarters has 7,500 m² of floor space.

The museum opened on 23 August 1962 as the Museo de Artesanía y Arte Popular in the Palacio de los Marqueses de Villaverde, a house built around 1730 and declared a national monument on 15 April 1930. In 2004 a branch opened in Sucre, in the Castillo de Francisco Argandoña, and in 2005 the La Paz headquarters was enlarged to 7,500 m². Its documentary holdings grew with the Posnansky, Ponce Sanginés, Albarracín and APCOB collections.

The museum's name in Quechua is Mamallaqtap Llaqta Yachay Llaqta Kawsay Musiyun. Since 1987 it has hosted the Reunión Anual de Etnología, an annual meeting of seminars, talks and round tables open to the public, whose papers are published in the Anales series. Its collection includes masks, ceramics, textiles, feather art and coins.

The museum occupies the Palacio de los Marqueses de Villaverde at the corner of Ingavi and Jenaro Sanjinés streets in central La Paz. The 2005 extension brought the La Paz site to 7,500 m², so allow time to cross its three colonial patios and several floors. A branch opened in 2004 in Sucre, in the Castillo de Francisco Argandoña.

A separate room of the museum is dedicated to numismatics and displays coins and banknotes from different phases of Bolivian history. This collection tells a different story than the better-known exhibits and shows economic changes through the design of currency.
