The protected area spans 1,776,914 hectares of Amazon rainforest, featuring rivers, terraces, floodplains, and altitudes from 51 to 256 meters above sea level.

The Brazilian government established Mapinguari National Park in 2008 and expanded its boundaries in 2010, adding 180,900 hectares while adjusting for the Jirau Dam construction.

The park derives its name from a creature in Brazilian mythology, reflecting local folklore traditions that have persisted through generations in the Amazon region.

Visitors can access the park through the municipalities of Canutama, Lábrea, and Porto Velho, where accommodations and guided tours are available throughout the year.

Scientists recently discovered the Campina jay and documented Stephen Nash's titi monkey within the park boundaries, highlighting its role in biodiversity research.
