Mapinguari National Park

Mapinguari National Park is a large protected area in the Brazilian Amazon that contains rivers, elevated terraces, and floodplain areas. The land varies in elevation from around 50 to 250 meters, showing the natural diversity of the rainforest landscape.

The Brazilian government created the park in 2008 to protect the Amazon rainforest. The protected area was expanded in 2010, adding more land while making adjustments for dam construction in the region.

The park takes its name from a figure in Brazilian mythology, a creature that lives on in stories told by people across the Amazon region. This legend reflects the way locals connect with the forest around them.

The park is accessible from the towns of Canutama, Lábrea, and Porto Velho, where lodging and guided tours are available year-round. Plan your visit during the dry season when access is easier and trails are more manageable.

Scientists have documented the rare Campina jay and a little-known species of small monkey within the protected area. These discoveries show that the forest continues to reveal new species to researchers.
