San Juan de Yapacaní Municipality, Japanese settlement municipality in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia
San Juan de Yapacaní is a municipality in Ichilo province situated about 124 kilometers northwest of Santa Cruz de la Sierra along Route 4. The area spans 1,620 square kilometers and is characterized by agricultural land where rice, soybeans, and poultry are produced.
The municipality was founded in 1955 when Japanese immigrants arrived and established settlements in the region. Additional groups continued to arrive until 1992, bringing the total to around 1,685 settlers who shaped the area's agricultural development.
The community reflects its Japanese heritage through agricultural practices that remain visible in the fields today. Local farmers work with methods influenced by both Japanese and Bolivian traditions, growing rice and soybeans across the region.
The region has a warm and humid climate with average temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius and substantial rainfall year-round. The best time to visit is during the drier season when roads are more accessible and agricultural activities are easier to observe.
The municipality produces a significant portion of Bolivia's poultry through farms that emerged from the 1970s onward. In recent years, macadamia nut cultivation has also been introduced, expanding the agricultural variety in the region.
