Memorial JK, Museum and presidential memorial in Monumental Axis, Brazil
Memorial JK is a building complex on the Monumental Axis in Brasília that consists of a tall tower, a burial chamber and several museum rooms. At the top of the tower stands a large bronze statue of Juscelino Kubitschek with outstretched arms, clearly visible from the ground.
The complex was built after the death of the former president and inaugurated in September 1981, designed by the same architect who had previously planned many of the city's most important government buildings. The remains were brought here from Rio de Janeiro and placed in the burial chamber.
Personal belongings of the former president fill several rooms and show his clothing, family photos and handwritten notes from the time when the new capital was being built. Visitors can also read newspaper articles and official documents explaining how he made the decision to build and which architects he chose.
The building opens Tuesday to Sunday in the morning and closes in the early evening, with Monday closed. The entrance is right next to the parking area, and the rooms are on ground level or accessible via ramps.
The walls of the burial chamber are covered with abstract geometric tiles designed in deep blue tones. These ceramic elements were specially made for this room and create an unusual atmosphere inside.
