Itamaraty Palace, Governmental palace in Brasilia, Brazil

The Itamaraty Palace features a rectangular structure with extensive glass walls and concrete arches surrounding a reflective water basin on Three Powers Plaza.

Oscar Niemeyer conceived this building between 1962 and 1970 to house Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the transfer of the capital from Rio de Janeiro.

The interior spaces display marble walls by Athos Bulcão, paintings from Brazilian artists, and a central spiral staircase connecting three floors of diplomatic functions.

Free guided tours of the palace run from Tuesday to Friday, allowing visitors to explore the architectural details and art collections of this governmental building.

The structure extends over water features designed by Roberto Burle Marx, creating a visual effect where the building appears to float above the surface.

Monuments of Brazil: colonial architecture, contemporary museums, and natural sites

Brazilian architectural heritage reflects centuries of history, from colonial fortifications to contemporary structures. In São Paulo, the Flag Monument pays tribute to colonial expeditions, while in Belém, the Peace Theater recalls the prosperity of the rubber era. In Curitiba, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum showcases modern Brazilian architecture, and in Rio de Janeiro, the National Library holds over 9 million works in a neoclassical building. This collection brings together diverse sites that tell the story of the country’s development: military fortresses like São José de Macapá from the 18th century, cultural institutions like the Museum of Tomorrow focused on environmental issues, and managed natural spaces such as the Curitiba Botanical Garden. These sites offer an exploration of Brazil's history, architecture, and culture.

Oscar Niemeyer architecture in Brazil and worldwide

Oscar Niemeyer created buildings with geometric forms and concrete structures. His works include the Cathedral of Brasília, the Congress building with its distinctive towers, and the disk-shaped Contemporary Art Museum in Niterói. His structures define Brazilian modernism and extend to Europe, such as the Communist Party Headquarters in Paris and the Cultural Center in Asturias.
