Lago das Rosas, Public park and zoo in Goiânia, Brazil

Lago das Rosas is a large public park in downtown Goiânia with a lake, walking paths, and resting areas throughout the grounds. The site also houses a zoo with animals displayed across different sections of the park.

The park began in 1937 as a forest nursery, created on the advice of staff from Rio de Janeiro's Botanical Garden. In 1941 a lake formed in the Capim Puba stream valley and spring, and the site became a bathing resort. In the 1950s the nursery was turned into Goiânia's zoo, and in the late 1960s swimming in the lake was banned after drownings.

The park serves as a gathering place where people from the city come to walk, exercise, and spend time together. The lake and green areas form the social heart of this neighborhood.

The park lies between the Centro and Oeste districts, and the city zoo occupies an adjoining area of the grounds. Bathing in the lake has been banned since the late 1960s after drowning cases, so the water is not for swimming. Look for the art deco diving board and the wind-rose wall, both listed by Iphan.
