Roman Catholic Territorial Prelature of Xingu, Catholic territorial prelature in Para, Brazil
The Roman Catholic Territorial Prelature of Xingu is an ecclesiastical administrative unit that covers vast portions of the state of Para and serves Catholic followers along the Xingu River. It coordinates religious activities for approximately 300,000 Catholic members throughout this Amazon region.
The prelature was established on August 16, 1934, carved from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Belém do Pará, and later expanded its boundaries. In 1952, additional territories from the Archdiocese of Santarém were added to its jurisdiction.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Aparecida in Altamira serves as the spiritual heart for the local Catholic community. Regular masses and religious celebrations here shape the religious life of believers across the Amazon region.
The prelature maintains its administrative base in Altamira from where it coordinates religious services and pastoral activities. Visitors can attend masses at the cathedral to experience the spiritual life of the community firsthand.
The institution received a new status in 2019 when it was elevated to the Diocese of Xingu-Altamira. This change strengthened its role as an independent ecclesiastical jurisdiction within the Amazon region.
