Terra do Meio Ecological Station

Terra do Meio Ecological Station is a protected forest area between the Xingu and Iriri Rivers in the Amazon region. It contains different forest types with varying layers and structures, and the land sits at a modest elevation.

The Brazilian government created this protected area in 2005 to preserve a large section of Amazon rainforest. This decision was part of a broader effort to safeguard different parts of the forest through legal protections.

Riverside families living here continue traditional ways of life, growing cocoa sustainably and working together as communities within their sections of the forest. Their daily rhythms are shaped by the river and the dense vegetation around them.

Because this area is very remote, careful planning is needed to visit it, and local guides are essential for exploring safely. It stays hot and humid year-round with frequent rain, so waterproof gear and patience are necessary.

The forest is home to rare bird species like the white-crested guan and dark-winged trumpeter that are found in few other places. These birds signal the health of the forest and why this protected zone matters for the region.
