Tapajós hydroelectric complex, Hydroelectric complex in Pará, Brazil.
The Tapajós hydroelectric complex comprises seven dams located on the Tapajós and Jamanxim rivers in Pará state. These dams span across the middle and lower portions of the Tapajós basin in the Amazon region.
Initial surveys for the complex began in the period from 1986 to 1991, with project planning resuming during the early 2000s. The development has experienced various governmental delays since then.
The development affects multiple indigenous territories, including the Munduruku land, where the Chacorão dam plans indicate flooding of 18,700 hectares.
The site is located in a remote part of the Amazon region and is difficult to reach by conventional roads. Visitors should expect challenging infrastructure and water conditions that vary greatly with the season.
The project follows a platform model where workers and materials arrive by river or helicopter, eliminating the need for access road construction.
