Amazon Tall Tower Observatory, Research tower in São Sebastião do Uatumã, Brazil.
The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory is a research tower that rises above the rainforest canopy and is equipped with scientific instruments that collect data continuously. The structure allows scientists to study forest-atmosphere interactions across a large region.
The project emerged from a German-Brazilian partnership and construction began in 2014. This international research effort brought together expertise and resources to deepen understanding of the Amazon region.
Scientists from the National Institute for Amazon Research and Max Planck Institute work together at this facility to study forest-atmosphere interactions.
The tower is accessible only to authorized researchers and technical staff who work with specialized equipment. Visitors should note that this is a research facility, not a tourist attraction.
The structure has three research platforms at different heights to measure various layers of the forest environment. This enables simultaneous measurements of carbon dioxide, heat flow, and wind patterns at different levels.
