Amazônia National Park, National park in Pará and Amazonas, Brazil
Amazônia National Park is a protected area spanning across Pará and Amazonas states along the Tapajós River. The landscape features dense tropical rainforest mixed with sections of white-sand grassland.
The park was established in 1974 through federal decree to protect the region's biodiversity. This early creation made it a pioneer example of conservation in the Brazilian Amazon.
The Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade manages this protected area, maintaining research facilities and educational programs about rainforest preservation.
Reaching the park requires a flight to Santarém followed by boat travel to the area. Water levels vary seasonally, which affects accessibility and the condition of travel routes throughout the year.
Trees in the park reach heights exceeding 50 meters, forming a dense canopy that filters light and provides habitat for countless vines, lichens, and orchids. This extreme vertical structure creates multiple living layers, each with its own communities of plants and animals.
