Parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a Baroque church in Cachoeira built with a rectangular floor plan and two side corridors. The structure features twin towers topped with pyramid shapes and load-bearing walls of stone and brick that form its solid frame.

Construction began in the late 16th century with support from local residents and the Portuguese Crown, with King John V contributing eight thousand cruzados. This royal backing helped establish a significant religious building in colonial Brazil.

The interior walls display Portuguese tile work that rises about 4 meters high, forming the largest collection of Portuguese tiles outside Portugal. This decoration reflects the deep bond between Brazil and Portugal and shapes how the space feels when you step inside.

The building sits between Ana Nery Street and 13 de Maio Square in the lower section of Cachoeira's historic center. It is easy to reach on foot and located in an area you will naturally explore while walking through the old town.

The nave ceiling displays Italian illusionistic painting by José Joaquim da Rocha, a remarkable artistic achievement. The rococo side altars and neoclassical main altar create a visual interplay of different artistic styles across different periods.
