Museu do Sertão

The Museu do Sertão occupies the former Railway Station in Piranhas and displays weapons, clothing, and artifacts from the early 20th century. The collection documents everyday life in the poor backlands of northeastern Brazil through objects that survive from that era.

The location became known for social banditry movements during the early 20th century, particularly the cangaço phenomenon. A military operation in 1938 marked the end of this violent period and made the place historically significant for northeastern Brazil.

The museum displays personal belongings and photographs that reveal how ordinary people lived in the poor northeastern region and what their daily lives looked like. Through these objects, visitors can grasp the difficult conditions and social circumstances that shaped the communities.

Admission is free and the museum is located in a central spot that is easy to reach on foot. Plan for about two hours to properly explore all the exhibitions and objects on display.

The collection preserves authentic items directly connected to well-known figures of that era, offering visitors an immediate link to the people involved. These personal relics give the exhibition an emotional depth that goes beyond written descriptions.
