Memorial da Balaiada

The Memorial da Balaiada is a museum and documentation center housed in a former police barracks building with exhibitions spread across multiple rooms. The collections display objects that tell the story from different perspectives of the events during that period.

The museum preserves artifacts from the Balaiada revolt spanning 1838 to 1841, including weapons, lead bullets, and archaeological finds from excavations. These objects were later combined with historical records to create a more complete picture of the events.

The memorial documents the struggles of black people, mixed-race individuals, and middle-class citizens against landowners during Brazil's Regency period. Visitors can see how these social tensions shaped life in the region and what roles different groups played in the conflicts.

The memorial is located on Avenida General Sampaio in the Cangalheiro neighborhood and welcomes visitors Monday through Friday. Guided tours are available to help you better understand the displayed objects.

The collection holds around 350 archaeological pieces, including torture instruments and personal belongings of rebellion leaders. These personal objects give visitors a more direct insight into the lives of people who were involved in the fighting.
