Museu do Piauí, Historical museum in central Teresina, Brazil
Museu do Piauí is a museum housed in a neoclassical building on Praça Marechal Deodoro in downtown Teresina. The building has symmetrical windows and marked pilasters on its facade, and inside it holds permanent rooms with objects ranging from prehistoric artifacts to Chinese porcelain and fine art.
The building was put up in 1859 and served as the seat of the state government from 1873 to 1925, then became a courthouse for several decades. It was converted into a museum in 1975, giving the structure a new public role after more than a century of administrative use.
The museum shows works by Brazilian artists alongside everyday objects from the northeast, giving a clear picture of how people lived and worked in this part of the country. The folk art and religious objects on display are still part of daily life in the region today.
The museum sits right on the main square in downtown Teresina, making it easy to reach on foot from most central points. Guided tours are available and can help make sense of the different rooms and their collections.
Among the objects on display are indigenous funeral urns from the prehistoric past of Piauí state, which are among the rarest of their kind in the whole northeast of Brazil. The collection also holds National Guard uniforms that document how military culture in the region changed over time.
