Cine Rex, Art Deco movie theater in Praça Pedro II, Teresina, Brazil.
Cine Rex is an Art Deco cinema on Praça Pedro II that spans two floors with a main screening room seating about 800 spectators. An upper gallery provides an additional 450 seats, creating a tiered viewing layout throughout the structure.
The cinema opened on February 25, 1939, with a screening of The Great Waltz as its inaugural film. It operated as a major entertainment venue until ceasing operations in 2005.
The building displays Art Deco features with geometric forms, clean lines, and bold proportions highlighted by blue stained glass windows and Italian marble inside. This design reflects the aesthetic preferences of the 1930s and continues to shape the character of the square today.
The building stands next to Teatro Quatro de Setembro in downtown Teresina and is easy to reach on foot. The site is currently not accessible to visitors, as the structure has remained unused for several years.
In 2007, the documentary 'Cine Rex É Nosso' was projected onto the building's facade, bringing together filmmakers, musicians, dancers, and poets. This event was a creative tribute to the venue's place in the community's memory.
