Teresina, State capital in Piauí, Brazil
Teresina is the capital of Piauí state in northeastern Brazil, spreading along the Parnaíba River that forms the border with Maranhão state. Several bridges connect the city to Timon on the opposite bank, creating a close link between both states.
The settlement was originally known as Vila Nova do Poty and was renamed Teresina in 1852 when it became the capital of Piauí. The new name honored Brazilian Empress Teresa Cristina and marked the beginning of a new phase for the state.
The city carries Empress Teresa Cristina's name in many local institutions and street signs throughout the capital. The cathedral draws pilgrims and parishioners from across the state, serving as a gathering point for religious celebrations.
The local airport offers connections to major Brazilian cities, making arrival from different parts of the country straightforward. The riverside promenade along the Parnaíba invites walks and provides views of the river and the opposite shore in Maranhão.
This northeastern Brazilian capital is the only one in the region not located on the Atlantic coast, sitting 366 kilometers (227 miles) inland instead. The Parnaíba River serves as both a natural boundary and a trade route extending all the way to the port of Parnaíba on the coast.
