Cemetery Nossa Senhora da Soledade

Cemetery Nossa Senhora da Soledade is a burial ground in the Batista Campos neighborhood of Belém, distinguished by its neoclassical design. A central chapel anchors the layout, while decorative iron gates imported from England frame the entrance.

The cemetery was founded in 1850 when Belém faced a yellow fever epidemic that overwhelmed existing burial capacity. It served as the city's primary burial site until its closure in 1880.

The cemetery is named after Our Lady of Sorrows, reflecting religious devotion that remains important in local tradition. Visitors can see how people in Belém use this space as a place for remembrance and spiritual connection.

The site is located on Avenida Serzedelo Corrêa in central Belém and is relatively easy to access. After major restoration work, it reopened in 2023 as Parque Cemitério da Soledade and is now open for visitors to explore.

The entrance portico was designed by architect Pezerat and features lioz stone masonry, a rare material typically used in Portugal. This level of detail reveals the economic prosperity Belém enjoyed during that era.
