Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth of Exile, Minor basilica in Nazaré, Belém, Brazil
The Basílica de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré do Desterro is a neoclassical church in the Nazaré district of Belém, in northern Brazil. The facade features two symmetrical bell towers, a dome over the crossing, and an entrance area with columns and curved lines.
Construction of the church began in the early 20th century and was completed in 1909, roughly two centuries after a local resident found a small statue of the Virgin in the area. A simple wooden chapel once stood on this spot and was gradually replaced by larger structures over time.
The church stands at the heart of the Círio de Nazaré, a multi-day religious event held each October that draws believers from across Brazil and beyond to Belém. During the celebration, the statue of the Virgin is carried through the streets in procession, accompanied by hymns, prayers, and crowds that line the route for kilometers.
Visitors can enter the interior, attend services, or view the displayed religious objects. Opening hours tend to be generous, but respectful distance is advised during worship times.
A small shrine in the main altar preserves the original statue of the Virgin, accessible to the public only on special occasions. This image is kept behind protective glass throughout the year and is only unveiled during the annual celebrations.
